Kansas City Voices mission is to discover, encourage and promote creativity and communication through literature, art, and other forms of cultural expression.
We publish an annual eclectic mix of fiction, essays, interviews, articles, poetry, and art. We seek exceptional written and visual creations from established and emerging voices. The magazine is published in November of each year.
SUBMISSION PERIOD AND DEADLINE |
Our submissions period for Volume 10 is November 15, 2011, through March 15, 2012. Submissions before and after these dates will not be accepted. Late submissions will not be held until our next submissions period. They must be re-submitted during our next submissions period (beginning in November 2012). Watch this page for specific dates for the next open submissions period.

We now accept submissions for Prose, Poetry and Art only online and only through Submittable. No hard copy submissions will be accepted, nor will they be returned. Please see the link at the end of these guidelines to submit your work.
There is no need for submissions to relate to Kansas City or the Midwest.
All submissions are blind. Any submissions with identifying information will be rejected.
All work must be unpublished at time of submission.
Simultaneous submissions are accepted. Please notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere.
Submission to multiple categories is allowed. The maximum number of contributions we will accept from one person is: 3 poems, 2 prose pieces, 3 art pieces.
We will contact you only if your piece is selected for publication. If you have not heard from us by June 15, 2012, your work has not been accepted. |
Violation of the general submission guidelines or of the specific guidelines set out below
for the category of your work is an automatic disqualification.
You will not receive any notification that your work is disqualified,
so please read the guidelines carefully.

PROSE | Specific Guidelines

We accept fiction, memoir, essays, interviews, and articles on places or history. Any subject is considered.
Prose pieces must be no longer than 2500 words. We do accept excerpts from longer works, if they stand on their own.
Prose pieces must be in 12-point font, Times New Roman or Courier, double spaced. Only DOC, DOCX and RTF formats will be accepted.
Please complete all required fields, but DO NOT include your name or any identifying information on the attachment you upload because we take only blind submissions.
Authors may submit up to two works of prose. Submission of more than two works of prose will disqualify all prose submissions from being considered. For multiple submissions, you need to complete two separate submission forms.
In the cover letter section of the form please include a word count of the submitted piece and biography of 50 words or less. If you are submitting multiple pieces you will need to include your bio with each individual submission.
Payment for each published prose piece will be $30 and one free copy of the magazine. In the sole discretion of the publisher, one prose piece may receive a "Best of Prose" award in the amount of $100. |
POETRY | Specific Guidelines

Poems must be no longer than 35 lines. Any subject considered.
Poems must be in 12-point font, Times New Roman or Courier fonts. Only DOC, DOCX and RTF formats will be accepted. Work must be single-spaced (double spaced between stanzas, if any).
Please complete all required fields, but DO NOT include your name or any identifying information on the attachment you upload because we take only blind submissions.
Authors may submit up to three poems. Submission of more than three poems will disqualify all poems from being considered. For multiple submissions, you need to complete three separate submission forms.
In the cover letter section of the form please include a word count of the submitted piece and biography of 50 words or less. If you are submitting multiple pieces you will need to include your bio with each individual submission.
Payment for each published poem will be $20 and one free copy of the magazine. In the sole discretion of the publisher, one poem may receive a "Best of Prose" award in the amount of $100.

ART | Specific Guidelines

Artist must have required model and/or property releases.
We accept only JPG or TIFF digital file formats. All files must be 300dpi, with all fonts and images embedded.
4-Color art must be CMYK. Black and white art must be black or grayscale (% of black).
If you do not know how to format your work in 300 dpi, CMYK, please take your work to a print shop or office supply store for assistance in scanning your work in the proper format. Art not reproduced in accordance with these guidelines will be disqualified.
Please complete all required fields, but DO NOT include your name or any identifying information on the attachment you upload because we take only blind submissions.
Artists may submit no more than three works of art. Submission of more than three works of art will disqualify all art submissions from being considered. For multiple submissions, you need to complete three separate submission forms.
In the cover letter section of the form please include the name, dimensions and media of your original piece, and a biography of 50 words or less. If you are submitting multiple pieces you will need to include your bio with each individual submission.
Payment for each published piece of art will be $25 and one free copy of the magazine. The artist whose piece is chosen for the front cover will receive $100.
